Lynne Herbst, librarian at the Mount Holly Town Library, has been coordinating the town cleanup event for almost nine years. While her main goal is to get people on board with the Green Up process, she has another goal; to get the children in town involved.

Friday, Herbst will go to the local school and show off the Basket of Summer Fun.

“Each year I put together a basket filled with squirt guns, Frisbees and such for the kids,” she said. “Then I go to the school and tell the kids they have a chance to win this if they come help out with Green Up Day. It works so well because they learn about the importance of the day, and have fun doing it.”

Herbst said the Belmont General Store serves free lunches to those who take the time to volunteer.

“The town is geographically expansive, so we have a lot of roads to cover,” Herbst said. “But we get a good turnout, rain or shine.”
