Join Us for Ludlow's Community Read in April

Ludlow, Vermont.  The Vermont Humanities Council sponsored Vermont Read for 2015 is Salman Rushdie’s “Haroun and the Sea of Stories”.  As a part of Vermont Reads, several Ludlow organizations will be hosting a community book discussion of  “Haroun and the Sea of Stories” on Tuesday April 14th at 6 p.m. at the Black River High School located at 43 Main Street in Ludlow.
Written as Rushdie went into hiding after the publication of “The Satanic Verses”, he wrote a book that his son would want to read.  Rushdie creates his own fantastic folktale, modern yet steeped in the narrative traditions of world cultures. The story features storyteller Rashid Khalifa and his young son, Haroun. A great upheaval in their family causes Rashid to lose his voice, his stories, and possibly, the family’s livelihood.  Haroun’s challenge — complete with water genies and talking fish — is to unclog the Sea of Stories and restore his father’s storytelling abilities. Discover with others the power of reading, and of reflecting on the importance of stories and imagination.  Interested readers can stop by Fletcher Memorial Library to borrow up a copy of the book.
The book discussion on Tuesday April 14th will provide an opportunity for local readers to come together and meet in small groups to discuss the book.  Black River Middle School 8th Graders will lead these small groups of readers in discussions of the book.
The book discussion is sponsored locally by the Black River Middle and High School, the Fletcher Memorial Library, The Book Nook, and The Friends of the Fletcher Memorial Library.  The book discussion is free and open to the public and there will be snacks too!  Contact Scott Stearns at (802) 2283238 for more information.
