BURLINGTON, Vt. -
The man wanted for a murder in Springfield has been captured by police.
Authorities say Gregory Allen Smith, 30, of Springfield, was arrested at a campground in Londonderry, Vermont, Thursday.
Smith has been on the loose since Saturday evening, when police say he shot Wesley Wing, 37. Wing was shot four times in the chest and torso, but managed to make his way to a store, where he told people there he had been shot. He later died at the hospital in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Smith had been on the lam since Saturday in a stolen car. Police say their investigation led to the campground, where Smith was arrested Thursday morning with a girlfriend, Wendy Morris, 25, of Springfield. It's not yet clear when Smith or Morris will appear in court.
Keene police arrested another one of Smith's girlfriends, Kristin Walsh, Tuesday, for allegedly trying to help Smith evade capture, for trying to coerce witnesses and for lying to police about Smith's whereabouts. She's due in court next week.
The investigation into Smith's whereabouts was aided by the recently created special crimes unit with the Vermont State Police. That team has a core of investigators who work on high-profile cases.
