Shrewsbury fire claims one life
SHREWSBURY — One person was killed in a fire that destroyed a Shrewsbury home Friday.
Vermont State Police had not released the name of the victim as of Saturday afternoon.
The Shrewsbury Fire Department responded to the fire on Cold River Road shortly before 4 p.m. Friday.
The home, which was set back from the road, was engulfed by flames, police reported. Additional fire crews were called in from Mount Holly, Clarendon, Rutland Town, Wallingford, East Wallingford and Ludlow.
A witness said more than 30 tankers of water were used to fight the blaze.
It was during firefighting efforts that the body was found, police said.
Damage to the home was estimated at $200,000.
The fire is not considered suspicious, police said, but the state police Fire Investigation Unit and the Division of Fire Safety responded to the scene.
